Not being able to communicate effectively with coworkers and management is a quick way to the unemployment line. Every boss or hiring manager wants to know that he or she has an employee that can communicate effectively with coworkers. Of course, this doesn't mean that you need to be the class debate champion, but it does mean that you need to get your point across in an effective, efficient and timely manner.

Few behaviors can be as destructive in the work place as a negative attitude. Most experienced bosses will take an employee with job performance issues and problems over a negative employee any day of the week. A negative employee can effectively bring the entire office down with them. In fact, experienced bosses and managers know that one negative working spreading a negative attitude can effectively do the damage of several mediocre or lazy workers.

No one likes being around a "know it all." Arrogant employees tend to irritate coworkers and cost businesses customers and thus money. If you are arrogant it is best that you keep it to yourself.

Employers like to see job seekers that have stepped out of the box, learned new things and showed initiative. Experience such as working at an Alaska summer job or studying a semester abroad is the kind of work experience and initiative that bosses will appreciate and look for in employees. However, above all, employees are looking for those who are team players and want to get the job done. This, of course, means refraining from negative behavior, such as being rude and arrogant to customers and not communicating effectively with management and coworkers. If all these points sound like commonsense to you, then you are in good shape. After all, these fundamental workplace standards are becoming increasingly difficult to find.
