Medical Careers - Is It The Right Choice For You?

By Deon Du Plessis

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

Are you considering a career in the medical field? Many say that its something that need to be a calling and not just another job. In many ways this is true because it can be a very demanding and very challenging. It does not suite every type of personality and unless you have the tenacity, the care and the passion it will probably get to you after a while.

In saying that, there are so many new fields in medicine and each and every one demands a different set of skills and personality. Becoming a doctor has its obvious challenges. It takes years of long and hard study to become a doctor and once you are qualified it really is a demanding job. Having other people's lives in your hands is a huge responsibility and without a sincere desire to help people you will probably hate the job.

Medical assistant jobs require a lot less skill and for many of them you can get qualified in or or two years. The great advantage is that these jobs don't have that massive responsibility that doctors and physicians have. You will probably need a lot more people skills as you will deal a lot with patients on a personal level. Nurses and assistants tends to see the side of medicine that doctors prefer to stay away from. You need a patient and caring personality and above all you need to love your job.

Regardless of the field you choose to go into, you need to get really clear on what the job will be all about. Talk to people who are already doing the job. See if you can find a temporary placement and do the job for a day. Finally, don't let money be the main driving force behind your decision. Let your heart guide you.

Jobs Hiring Now - Grab One Before It's Too Late

By Susan Bean

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

If you have found yourself out of work you should check out the jobs hiring now - grab one before it's too late as the best positions do not stay vacant for long. Today there are in fact a number of avenues you could explore that can allow you access to the most desirable of positions.

Fortunately the mass lay offs caused by the recession have now come to and end and more companies and businesses are once again bolstering their staff levels. When it comes to locating suitable positions you should streamline your search so that you do not waste time on openings that do not match your profile.

Most people are now aware that the internet is the best resource when it comes to locating desirable jobs. But as there are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of job boards now online, you will need to identify which portals offer the best opportunities. Instead of searching generic job boards you should locate sites that offer vacancies relevant to your expertise. For example if you are a trained mechanic or chef carry out a search for job boards dedicated to these fields. It can also save you a lot of time and effort if you find job portals that offer positions in your geographic region.

Apart from the internet there is still the option of using more traditional methods to find suitable positions. Your local employment shop or job center should be able to help you understand what opportunities are currently lying vacant. Keep in mind that certain employers have preferred methods of advertising their vacancies. Usually the larger the company the more likely it is they will place information relating to current openings in an employment center.

Another option is to search the classified sections of magazines and newspapers. Your local paper is likely to contain a comprehensive list of positions that need to be filled quickly. Also you can check out specialist magazines which can also provide a wealth of valuable information. The more methods you use for locating suitable jobs the better chance you would have of being successful in your endeavour.

If you still have difficulty identifying desirable vacancies it may be worthwhile asking old work colleagues as well as friends and family if they know of anything suitable. It is often through word of mouth that we are able to locate the best jobs. Do not be afraid of using your personal contacts.

How to Make Yourself Stand Out When Applying for Marketing Jobs

By Mark E Matthews

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

While it is true that the marketing employment sector is tight these days, by no means does it mean that there isn't room for a dedicated and driven young marketer to find huge success. However, if you do expect to make your mark as a marketer, when looking for jobs you are going to need to find ways to make your expertise stand out from that of the competition. With that being said, here are some things that you can think about which can help you get those marketing jobs instead of your competitors.

In today's marketing world, the internet is by far the most important area for you to have expertise in. The problem is, there are still too many marketers that pride themselves on all their marketing expertise in offline marketing techniques. While off line marketing still has its place, if you want to jump to the front of the line, it is going to be all about being an expert internet marketer.

When it comes to internet marketing, you should be both well rounded, and have a particular area of expertise to offer. For instance, to market yourself convincingly as an online marketing expert, you are definitely going to need to know a considerable amount about search engine marketing. Although there are many other ways to make sales and drum up traffic online, even someone with only a passing familiarity with the internet knows that most people find websites through search engines. Learning about search engine optimization and Pay per Click marketing is critical for the would-be internet marketer.

Being a social media and social networking guru is also very important. In some cases, this might be enough to get you a marketing job on its own, because many companies find themselves hiring a marketer whose primary job is to promote their social presence online. Even though social networks may not yet bring in as much sheer volume in traffic as the search engines do, many times the traffic that they do bring is more trusting of the company because of the nature of social networks, and therefore more likely to buy. Having a strong knowledge of Twitter and Facebook, and knowing how to use them to promote a company is a great way to really make yourself valuable in the marketing job market.

The newest trend on the internet is of course the movement towards using the internet through mobile rather than desktop devices. The Smartphone experience on the internet is different than any other, and a cutting edge marketer that was familiar with mobile advertising, in app advertising, and with online marketing to mobile platforms is going to quickly stand out as a candidate that many people are going to be eager to hire, because it could give them the edge in this quickly emerging marketplace.

If you choose to make yourself stand out by promoting yourself as being an expert in any one of these areas, remember that you still are going to need some familiarity with all of them. Also, it is important that you stay on top of the latest developments in all the industries. Online marketing is a quickly changing field, and the marketer that is keeping pace with the current changes is always going to get more work than one that is falling behind the times.

Remember, that how your market yourself is going to be one of the things which makes you get the job. If a company can see clearly that you're an expert at marketing yourself, they are quickly going to realize that you might be able to do big things for them as well.

Personal Career Development - A Systematic Personal Career Plan Is Essential

By Jeremy Kong

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

In this constantly changing working environment today, personal career development planning is vitally important if we are to remain employable and to achieve our career goals. A systematic approach to your personal career plan is very essential these days if we are to observe that over the years, skills that were once in great demand have become obsolete due to the progress in new technology and market dynamics.

You may adopt a three step process approach for your personal career plan by assessing your current situation, examine and determine your future goals and finally to draw up a program towards achieving your future goals. These three step approach is elaborated in the next few paragraphs.

Your current situation is basically your resume or curriculum vitae. When assessing your current situation, you are basically drawing up your resume which is a very important document in your job search for the career opportunities that you are seeking. You are basically stating your experiences, skills, knowledge and qualification on paper. The resume has a dual purpose in that you are now fully aware of your current situation.

In personal career development planning, it is vary important to have a clear picture of your future goals, only then can you work towards achieving your objectives. You need to have a vision of your near term, medium term ad long term goals. For example, if you are an engineer and your goal is to be the director of a construction firm, your near term goal would be to be a project engineer, to be promoted to a project manager later and ultimately to achieve your long term goal of becoming a director of a construction firm.

It is important to work towards your ultimate career goal by focusing on a practical development program that will benefits and provides you with the necessary work experience and skills when you reach your career destination. Such program should include working under a more experienced person in your industry for the valuable mentoring assistance and guidance, as well as retraining and attending courses to build up your understanding and required skills relating to your industry. It may also be beneficial to work in different functions within the industry to acquire an overall knowledge of the industry if your ultimate goal is a managerial position such a director of a construction company. If you are already in well organized organization, you should constantly discuss with your immediate superior on your career development plan to obtain the necessary skills in the industry. Otherwise, it would be advisable to check the job market to steer your career path in the right direction.

In addition to the above, it is always important to develop soft skills such developing your personality and learning to work as a team. Building a successful career involves more than an individual's effort, therefore having the ability to work with others is an important trait to acquire.

As mentioned above a personal career plan should be in place if your desire is to achieve your career goal. Otherwise, you may find yourself stuck in your present position with little direction right up to the time for your retirement. Personal career development planning is the key to achieving your career goal and at the same time to help you to remain employable.

How To Find The Right Job If You Are A People Person

By Stewart Wrighter

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

There are far too many people stuck in jobs where all they do is sit at their desk all day and stare at the computer. A similar problem often occurs too. People who lack people skills are employed in jobs where it is necessary to have social skills and they leave clients, customers and those in need of their services feeling unappreciated and frustrated. If you think you would do a better job working in a position that exposes you to people, there are plenty of options from which to choose. Those working in sales, in situations where they are selling janitorial supplies may find that they will interact with people every day. Sales are a great way to interact with people and have new and exciting experience each day. Working with materials used in janitorial supply is a great chance to find happiness in your career.

If sales are not your thing, you can get plenty of exposure to the public working in a job that has you greeting people and welcoming them to your business. Administrative work may not seem like the perfect choice for a people-person, but if you are sitting at a desk right in the front of an office that gets visitors, you are sure to see plenty of people every day. You may not be solving major problems or changing their lives, but you will see fresh faces each day and have a chance to interact with a lot of different people.

Those who want to combine their social skills with helping people have plenty of options. As a matter of fact, most altruistic careers require that you have people skills to be successful. There are plenty of medical careers that give you a chance to work with people from all works of life on the daily basis. If you lack the funds or motivation to become a doctor, consider nursing, counseling and work in the school system or working as a dental assistant.

The medical field can be a tough profession because things do not always go well. While this may be the case in most jobs, it can be tougher when situations are a matter of life and death. If you are looking for a lower pressure job that still exposes you to the public, consider working in customer service. This is a great way to help people solve their problems in matters that are usually less serious than life or death.

Another option for those who want to use their social skills in their work is police or detective work. Civil servants often put their lives on the line, but they make a big difference in the lives of people every day. At any given moment, you may find yourself saving a life. Some days may be mundane, but you are always going to have the ability to help people, even if it is a smaller scale than saving a life. Each day you will leave your job feeling you have made a difference and enjoying your experience of working with the public.

Stewart Wrighter has an assistant at the office who searched the term Cincinnati janitorial supplies to find the items needed to clean the office building. His assistant orders cleaning supplies from a Cincinnati janitorial supply company because of convenience.

Considering A Career Change - Why Direct Sales May Be For You

By Matt McDonald

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

Many people have considered sales as a career. Many more have even tried sales at some point in their lives. And still many more have failed, never to try again because of a bad experience. What a shame. It is a career that is " laden with opportunity yet is fraught with heartbreak and despair and the bodies of those who have failed, were they piled one atop another, would cast it's shadow down upon all the pyramids of the earth" this quote comes from one of my favorite books, " The Greatest Salesman In The World ", a classic written by Og Mandino. It is a shame because many of these same people are rock star salespeople waiting to be discovered. I sincerely believe that.

Obviously, the main incentive to consider a career in sales is the income potential. The top salespeople are in the top 3-5% of income earners in the country. Note that I said the top salespeople, not salespeople in general. Other than income potential, there are many other benefits to a career sales, especially in this day and age. Many sales positions allow you to work from home, at least part time. Most sales jobs come with a certain amount of autonomy, if not a great deal of it. Which means you won't be micro managed. That means that you'll need self discipline and to be responsible for your results.

Unfortunately, the majority of people who have tried sales and failed, did not fail because they lacked " moxie ", "mojo " or some "magic ingredient". They failed because they were never trained in a sales process. They were given a list of leads, a script and told, "Go get 'em". They were never guided by a mentor who understands how to navigate their way through the minefield that sales can be to the uninitiated. If someone does aspire to be in sales as a career, they need to be coached on expectations, attitude, techniques, prospecting and the rest. And the first thing that they need to be taught is that salespeople are not born. Con artists are born. Salespeople, especially top salespeople, are made. Selling is a learned process. This is where I start in training my associates. The next thing I teach is that sales is a people business, not a commission business. It's about creating, building and maintaining relationships. Successful salespeople understand and are able to wrap their heads around this concept. You need to care about people. Sincerely care.

Since time immemorial, people have been taught that sales is a numbers game. "Pitch" to enough people and you'll make sales. I suppose that there is some truth to this. But sales is much more than a numbers game. It's a people game. And to me, a game it is not.

It's my belief that it is an honor and privilege to promote to be in direct sales. But with privilege comes responsibility. And the responsibility of an organization to it's associates is to train them on a system and process that works, to make them aware that there is work involved, as well as a learning curve. An organizations' associates should understand that yes, you can make mid to high six, even seven figures with in direct sales. It's not pie in the sky and it's not a joke. It can and has happened to many in the industry.. But it doesn't happen in 90 days, And it doesn't just happen. If you think you can just plug in to a system and earn 7 figures, that's not how it works. Business in general, and sales in particular, are contact sports. There are skill sets that must be developed. It is realistic, however, to begin earning 5-10K per month within 90 days if you are coachable and do what we teach. But it takes consistent effort and work.

What sales process do we teach? We teach a dialogue based sales process. A process which, when employed correctly, invites participation by both parties to a transaction. A process that eliminates all the tension, rejection and objections created by traditional selling methods. Would you consider a career in sales if they were no tension, rejection or objections to deal with? These are all actually created by traditional selling methods. I'd like to take credit for coming up with the concept of dialogue based selling, but alas, I can't. It's the brainchild of Michael Oliver. It's called Natural Selling and it's an enlightening read.

So, do yourself a favor and take another look at direct selling as a career choice. You'll be glad you did. You are a sales rock star just waiting to be discovered.

Mapping Your Career Path

By Candie Harris

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

Would you embark on a 40-year journey without an end in sight, or a map to get you to your destination? Unless you enjoy wandering the wilderness its best to travel, map and destination, firmly in hand. Bring that same planning and forethought to guiding your career path.

Plotting the Path

First, decide where you're heading. We're talking big picture: what do you want to be doing in 10, 20, 30 years? How would you be spending your days if money weren't an issue? Keep in mind that the picture may change over the years, what seems appealing at twenty may be less so in your forties, but pick a desired target and start moving towards it.

Next, assess your strengths and weaknesses, your likes and dislikes. Ideally, you should be spending your days doing work that you enjoy, that is meaningful and at which you excel. Life isn't high school: there are no required classes. True most of us have to earn a paycheck, but since we're happily well past the days of indentured servitude, exercise your freedom of choice selecting work which holds meaning for you and is a stepping stone towards your goals.

About those Stepping Stones...

Map your career to date against the goals you've set for yourself; have you been adding skills and experiences to your resume that are positioning you well? Not sure of the steps you need to take? Seek guidance from a mentor or colleagues or model others who have succeeded in the arena(s) to which you aspire.

Scrutinize your resume to see where you are strong and where you need to add skills or experiences. For example, if you wish to become a manager, begin developing your leadership skills by overseeing first individuals, working up to smaller teams, then whole business areas within your company, slowly growing your responsibilities. Look for opportunities to mentor subordinates and demonstrate you can steward increasingly larger projects to completion.

Or perhaps your long-term goal is to run your own business or to work as a self-employed freelancer. If so, spend time developing the leadership and sales skills required to run a business and to build the rolodex needed to attract customers or investment dollars.

Periodically assess your progress. Schedule time, once a year, every five years, and so on, to take a step back and survey your career development. Is it advancing? Can you enhance your current skills and better leverage yourself? Do you need to tweak your path? How have your personal or economic circumstances changed and what impact, if any, does that have on your next steps? Make time to take time: all important relationships require nurturing; your relationship with work needs attention too.

Make the Journey Meaningful

Finally, as you move along in your career, perhaps sticking to a straight, focused path, or taking a meandering, many branched road, remember that while you should constantly be moving towards a desired end, it is smart to make the most of whatever role you are presently in-to learn, grow and relish-the work you are currently doing.

Licenses Required for Accounting Careers

By Erik R Johnson

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

The licenses required for accounting careers will vary depending on what specific job you want to go into. The most options will be available to you if you become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), though, and there are very specific licenses required for this career designation. Of course some people who are not licensed but have degrees in accounting can become very successful as auditors or accountants in government offices and private companies. But for the sake of this article we will focus on the requirements for becoming a CPA.

If you want to become a CPA you will need to check with the governing agencies in your state or territorial designation. All states require that Certified Public Accountants have at least a 120-credit bachelor's degree, but most states have additional educational requirements now. You should expect to complete a 150-credit college degree program before sitting for the CPA Exam, as this is what the majority of states require. This degree program must also include a certain number of accounting courses and business courses depending on the specific requirements of your state.

Once you are qualified to sit for the CPA Exam in your state you will need to start studying diligently if you haven't already. This is a very difficult exam that many people fail, so it is best to take the exam shortly after finishing your college program while everything is fresh in your mind. There are review courses that can help.

If you pass the CPA Exam you will not automatically be granted a CPA license. There are ethics requirements in most states, which will include either another exam or an ethics course that you must take. Most states have experience requirements as well, but once you have passed the exams and fulfilled the other requirements you should not have a problem finding work, after which you will automatically qualify for the CPA license. Your state's board of accountancy may also require a certain number of continuing professional education hours in a specific period of time to maintain your license.

Why College Doesn't Lead to Career

By Susan Kennedy

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

Meet Dave, a recent college graduate with a double major in marketing and finance. Dave's dream job is to obtain a position in brand management at Under Armor. He did not come by this dream easily: Dave has a passion for sports clothing and even did a case study on Under Armor in college. He has some of the skills and experience required but does not have a proven track record of industry work experience. Dave is currently doing temporary work and is getting frustrated with his lack of success in his job search.

Dave is not alone. Parents and college graduates everywhere are wondering what happened to the American dream: a good education should lead to a good job. With the unemployment rate for Americans ages 18-24 hovering at 16%, that dream isn't holding true for many college graduates. The economy has certainly made its impact on this population with respect to meaningful employment. It's easy to attribute the lackluster job market for college graduates to the economy: less than 25% of the graduating class of 2010 had jobs at graduation.

As a job coach who works with the college student and college graduate population, I can easily cite other factors that equally hinder the employment prospects for college graduates:

  • Unrealistic career expectations
  • A true disconnect between what employers are looking for and what the graduate has to offer, and
  • Ineffective job search skills

So, what can entry-level professionals do to address these gaps?

First, set career goals that are realistic. Graduates need to be flexible about the types of jobs that they will consider and how far they are willing to travel. The goal of any first job is to establish a proven track record of results and to develop professional contacts. For example, in addition to his dream at Under Armor, Dave might also consider an entry-level marketing job at Saucony, Reebok or New Balance. If those jobs seem unattainable, Dave can also consider positions that "fall below" his expectations in those same companies. For example, an administrative position at Reebok may not be glamorous but can pay off in the long run as the employer sees Dave's motivation and hard work demonstrated.

Next, understand that employers are looking for a portfolio of marketable skills that clearly demonstrate how the candidate will add value to the organization from day one. Communication and analytical skills, a strong work ethic, leadership and the ability to self-manage are the qualities employers look for. The best ways to develop these skills (in order of employer preference) is through paid part-time work, internships, participation and/or leadership in a student organization and volunteer work. If a position requires analytical skills and a strong work ethic, the job seeker would be wise to identify ways in which he/she has used those skills in the classroom or in a work environment. He/she should be able to articulate those skills on a resume, cover letter as well as on a job interview.

Finally, beef up your job search skills.

  • Network, network, network. Approximately 85% of jobs are found through face-to-face networking. It is often at the second or third level of networking where job seekers will find success. Family, friends, bosses, coaches, professors and alumni are great sources of networking contacts.
  • Look where the jobs are. Companies with fewer than 100 employees anticipate a 26% increase in entry-level hiring for 2010. Understand that companies of that size typically do not have a presence on campus nor do they have a strong Human Resources department. The job seeker will have to aggressively search for the opportunities by asking contacts for suggestions and ideas.
  • Sharpen interview skills. Job candidates should be able to articulate how they will add value to prospective employers rather than focus on what the employer can do for them. Be prepared to give examples that demonstrate when and how the candidate used the marketable skills in question. Research the job and the organization prior to the interview and arrive armed with questions for the interviewer.

When the search is prolonged, job seekers should continue to develop marketable skills. Part-time work, temporary work, volunteer work or even starting a business will demonstrate work ethic and marketability. It is also helpful to close any background gaps. Running a fund raising event, for example, will enable the job seeker to include events planning, organization and persuasion to their list of marketable skills.

As for the economy? Acknowledge that it will take longer and it will take more work to find the right job than it has in past years. But by being proactive and making the most of opportunities that remain within your control you can significantly shorten the job search.

Asian Executive Careers: Income Convergence in Asia

By Richard Mills

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

Most people in Asia still think expatriates earn more than they do but the fact is that most of these differences have already been minimized. In advanced commercial centers like Singapore and Hong Kong, equal-pay-for-equal-work has been a reality for some time. In emerging countries, the situation is still evolving but the trend is well advanced even there.

Across Asia, local managers in growth sectors have seen relentless salary increases and many earn as much these days as any expatriate could ever hope for.

In the good old days, it was standard for expatriates to be provided with luxurious benefits to keep them comfortable during "hardship postings" in Asia. These included executive housing (including servants), automobile & driver, expensive international schooling for children, annual fly-backs for the entire family, country club memberships and even a "hardship bonus" that alone added 20% - 40% to base compensation.

Except for a few hold-outs, the traditional "expat package" has gradually but steadily been eroded over the past decade. Far from being considered an expatriate's right, today everything is negotiable. Companies often still provide financial support to their relocated managers but the amounts and types are gradually being reduced.

It used to be that overseas executive postings were top down in nature. Managers were sent from head-quarters to a far-flung country office for experience. They would spend 3 or 4 years dictating company operating procedures to local staff whose performance was measured by how well they complied. There was little opportunity for "locals" to aspire to senior management within their own country let alone outside it.

Today, Indians, Filipinos, Malaysians and Singaporeans all can be considered for the top jobs in their own countries and have the same cross posting opportunities in other countries as well.

Stay Productive While Searching for a Job

By Leigh Ann Conselye

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

Recently, the Virginian-Pilot ran a story about a local woman who had applied for 667 jobs before finally landing one. She knew the exact number because she tracked them all on a spreadsheet. This story served to highlight a few things

* The job market is still VERY tough

* There are ways to make your job search more efficient and remain productive while searching

In the case of this individual, she was not an entry-level worker. This was an experienced project manager who had been laid off from a telecommunications company. So, she promptly began to apply her skills to her newest project-finding a job. This is a great example of one way to stay focused and have a creative job search.

It's easy to become discouraged when looking for a job. In a way, it's almost like online dating-You read a great ad, write an engaging response showcasing you at your very best, then hope they like you enough to call you. Inevitably, some will call; and some will not. Here are a few things to keep in mind when going through this process.

Set reasonable goals
For example, make it a goal to find and respond to a certain number of job postings every week. Hitting this goal will give you a sense of accomplishment and will also keep your job hunt going. It can take weeks for employers to respond, so make sure you are continually searching and applying; don't sit back and wait for responses-keep going!

Volunteer
You would be amazed at how many people you can meet while helping out organizations that need assistance. It's not only a great way to network, but you can sharpen your current skills as well as learning new ones. In addition, it helps you structure your days so you are less likely to feel as if time is being wasted.

Consider non-traditional job search methods
It's not all about the classifieds these days! Think about trying social media sites such as LinkedIn.com, or Twitter to help you find opportunities. Consider creating a Twitter channel that focuses on the industry you want to work in, so that you can stay abreast of news. Start following others in the that industry and pay attention to their posts.

All of the methods listed above can be helpful to you as you search for a job. In addition to offering learning, experience, and exposure, they will also help you to feel productive. When you feel productive, you have more confidence, and that can make all the difference.

Asian Executive Careers: Key Trends

By Richard Mills

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

Regional Integration

The entire GDP of Philippines or even Singapore is about one-fourth that of Paris or Dallas-Fort Worth. Despite their fast economic growth, countries in Southeast Asia are still small and need to work together to be noticed in a global environment.

Rather than employ Country Managers for single countries, more companies assign managers to handle multiple countries in a hands-on operating capacity. Dividing time among 2 or 4 countries gives an adequate return to the employer and a more significant opportunity to the manager. The only downside is extra wear-and-tear on managers due to increased travel requirements.

Head Office Relocation

Beginners to Asia, generally choose to locate regional offices in the established commercial centers of Singapore and Hong Kong where work environments and lifestyles are similar to world standards. Companies with regional management teams who are more experienced in the region are becoming transferring themselves and their operations to cities like Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Manila that are less developed.

Cost savings is one important reason behind the move since a correctly executed relocation can easily save half the operating costs of running a regional head office.

Another more strategic reason behind the trend has to do with economic growth. It is reasonable to say that the bulk of the opportunities in Asia are in countries where the bulk of the population lives. Relocating a head office puts senior staff in better touch with prospects as they unfold.

Asia Becoming Valued

For most multinational companies, Asia currently accounts for less than 15% of total revenues but a disproportionate share of its growth.

Most global managers see slower growth ahead in so-called advanced economies. Countries in Asia were taught tough lessons about fiscal prudence during the Asian Crisis of the late 1990's and are now poised for strong sustainable growth in the coming years. This has not escaped the notice of multinational companies and Asia will be a focus for future investment.

Rise of Asian Multinationals

Companies in Asia are comparatively cash rich. As a result, they are in a better position to expand their operations as some hard-hit multinationals pull-back or sell operations.

Asian companies that in the past may have invested their funds in the west, today feel there are better opportunities closer to home. The result is that Asian companies are becoming realistic career opportunities for experienced international managers.

How to Get Noticed at Work: Climb the Corporate Ladder and Improve Your Job Prospects

By Paul X James

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

Working long hours? Long over-due promotion? sound familiar? Thousands of people work every day in their offices diligently and professionally but don't seem to get anywhere whilst others seem to zip up the ladder with seeming ease. The reason: they just don't get noticed or simply don't stick in the memory. Their response tends to be simply working even harder and longer to try and change the situation but it simply doesn't work.

Here are some top suggestions for getting yourself noticed at work:

1. Don't (just) do your job

Doing your job is what you're paid for; it's the bare minimum your employer expects. Over time you'll be rewarded for the quality of your reports, projects, hitting targets etc but it's a pretty inefficient way of going about getting noticed and standing out from everyone else.

Why not become that guy who always organises the world cup sweep stake? organises the charity collections? or arranges social events? Whilst often seen as the function of admin staff or juniors, any manager worth their salt knows that these roles require planning, management, and delivery skills. Anyone performing one of these roles to a high standard always stands out.

2. Be a Steady Eddy

Become the guy that delivers on his promises. If you promise to do something and follow through on it then you are more likely to be remembered for the next time an opportunity comes up. Managers like people that they can give a task to knowing that their involvement therein will be minimal. They don't want to spend their time troubleshooting and cleaning up after you've failed to deliver on what was agreed.

Being reliable is a skill in itself. If you promise the world in an effort to please then you're only setting yourself for a nasty fall. Know your limits and don't take on too much. Being solid and reliable might not be the most glamorous of traits but if you look around the office you may notice that those traits are not always available in abundance.

3. Be a Floor Walker

Not a Jedi knight but a friendly approachable guy around the office. Consciously take 10-15 minutes a week to talk briefly with people in the company that you don't normally interact with as part of your job.

It doesn't have to be important stuff but it shows people that you're interested in them and also makes you more likely to stick in their memory. If it's a more senior person then you may be in their mind when the next great opportunity comes up, if they are less senior then you never know when you might need a favour or they may pass you a good lead or idea.

It's seems crazy that people can work in an open plan office for years and never know anything about the person at the desk a few metres away. Yet it happens at offices all over the world all the time.

4. E-Mail (Almost) Everyone

The most effective tool you have at your disposal for letting others know what a great job you're doing is the 'cc:' line on you e-mail. It's a license to include anyone in any way connected with the project. Even if your boss doesn't even read the email, they will still see your name popping up in their inbox which will keep you in their minds and also reinforce the impression that you are busying away on the project.

Never be afraid to bother people with the 'cc:' as most prefer to be kept up to speed rather than risk missing something vital. If you are e-mailing someone too often then they'll usually politely let you know.

5. Be a Knowledge Hoover

Knowledge is something you start without and acquire over time. If you don't have it then you're at a disadvantage and the only way to get it is through experience and effort. Which explains why generally, the more experience you have then the more you tend to be worth to an employer.

Knowledge is great, it's a very powerful tool, but it is of limited use when it comes to getting noticed. In order to do that, knowledge needs to be coupled with something else: the desire to acquire more.

Consider this:

  • Mrs A knows a lot and takes little interest in learning anything new.
  • Mr/Mrs B knows a lot and takes a lot of interest in learning new things, asks plenty of questions, and is keen to take time to discuss different ideas and options
  • Mr/Mrs A = Knowledge
  • Mr/Mrs B = Knowledge PLUS Desire to Acquire More

Both individuals in the example possess plenty of knowledge and arguably this is FAR more important as it's what allows them to do their job effectively. It's the tool they need to do their job and get paid each month. Yet you probably know an 'A' and 'B' in your office and there is no need to explain who is more highly thought of and talked about.

So don't just listen to a colleague, engage them. Don't just nod politely, ask 'why?' don't just scan the training material, absorb it.

6. Play Teacher

Whilst the official line is 'those who can, teach' the in-joke in our, and many other, industries is that 'those who can't, teach'. Whilst this may be unfair to the teaching profession, it nevertheless highlights that 'doing' is generally considered a more worthy activity than instructing others on how to. Hence, In-house training and education at many companies falls well short of the mark.

However, children are our future, or rather graduates are. So why not take one (or a few) under your wing and impart all that knowledge to them through either a mentoring programme or through formal training sessions. No formal mechanism for this at your company? Go to talk to the boss about setting one up. You want to get noticed don't you?

What's in it for you? Increased job satisfaction, loyalty from less experienced colleagues, impress yourself with how much you know (hopefully), practice presenting and public speaking skills, a change in your typical working day, as well as getting noticed as someone knowledgeable and who can guide others (two key management skills).

7. Up, Up, Upskill and Away...

Upskilling involves an individual making the effort to obtain a new skill or to significantly increase their skills in a specific area. That could mean taking on a significant new commitment like an MSc or MBA or simply attending night school or an online course in Microsoft Office to improve your productivity. Either way, taking this on will not only get you noticed but further benefits will follow when you put your new found skills into action in your job.

Upskilling can be at its most beneficial when it's combined with a niche i.e. you obtain a skill that no one else in the company/department has. You become the expert by default.

For example, you may take a short course on marketing or desktop publishing for beginners. You may not be sufficiently qualified at the end of the course to able to get yourself a job with a big PR agency but you may find that in your small construction company you now know infinitely more than anyone else on that topic. So you become 'expert by default' and soon opportunities to get involved in BD, tender bids, newsletters will all come your way.

It is true to say that 'In the land of the blind, the one eyed man is king'

8. Attend Internal Social Events

You can work all day, every day, and do a great job but it's worthless in terms of getting rewarded for it if nobody is aware of your efforts. Office socials and after work drinks are a great way to socialise with people from the office but also a good chance for self-publicity.

In-between the discussions of the weekends football fixtures and the latest office romance, take the opportunity to mention a difficult problem you solved last week or some positive feedback you receive from a client or customer. You never know who is listening.

Don't be afraid to sell yourself. If you don't - then who else will?

9. Dress to Impress

I knew of a facilities manager who wore extremely 'loud' shirts. These weren't just 'Friday shirts', they were more akin to a purchase made shortly before a two week beach holiday in Hawaii. Whilst the assumption was that the manager was simply a bad dresser and/or colour blind, when asked, he explained that he did it to make himself clearly recognisable and easier for colleagues, consultants, contractors etc to find him.

And it worked; everyone seemed to know this guy even if not by name then by '... oh is that the guy with the bright shirts, yeah I know him'. The point being that you don't have to go to extremes (see article image) but a dress sense quirk when done correctly can be a quick win in-terms of raising your profile.

10. Learn to Say Yes to opportunities

Ever ducked out of something or turned it down because it's beneath you? you're too busy? not your area of expertise and so on? All very valid reasons for saying no but how many times have these been not reasons but excuses? How often is the real reason to say no in fact the fear of being taken out of your comfort zone or, even worse, simply the fear of failure?

Companies, especially the big multinational firms and contractors, tend to be risk averse and keen to protect their images (and PI insurance). Because of this, the danger in many companies is that you won't be given opportunities until you are more than ready to handle them. So the logic says that for any opportunities for new projects, or new responsibilities that are offered, the default answer should be 'yes please'. You already have to work against your employers risk adverse approach; don't be your own worse enemy as well.

Ask yourself what's the worse that could happen? You may be taking on a new project/role but you still have the support of managers and colleagues around, and its not likely that you're the first person ever to do the role or type of project in the history of the company. Even if the opportunity turns out not to be right for you, you're likely to be better off in the long run for having given it a try.

So there it is, our guide to getting noticed. Before putting any of the above into action just ensure sure you actually want to get noticed. Plenty of people are doing a great jobs and yet choose to fly very happily under the radar everyday. Good luck to them, there's a lot to be said for that approach.

And if you're going to get noticed make sure it's combined with being good at the job itself which is absolutely fundamental. Getting yourself noticed for being a useless employee is probably not going to enhance your career prospects - perhaps quite the opposite.

Their mission is to help people who have lost their job find a new one: you just have to submit your resume and the agency will announce you when jobs in your domain become available. If you do not trust public agencies, you may choose private ones as well: most of them have a website where one can find see all the vacant positions. Recession Proof Jobs For Tough Economic Times

By Nathan M. Purucker

Jobs Vacancy, Job vacancies, Employment Jobs

Although some things have improved slightly, the state of the economy is still poor. Jobs are hard to come by, and unemployment benefits won't last forever. The demand for recession proof jobs is very high. In order to stay afloat in our current economic crisis, we must change and adapt our careers. You have quite a few options to consider when searching for a new career. We'll discuss traditional choices, and an alternative as well.

The most recession proof industry is health care. There is already a shortage of nurses. Our countries large group of aging individuals will be increasing the demand. Nursing is a very good choice to consider when looking for recession proof jobs. A pharmacist is another health related field that is in demand no matter what shape our economy is in. People need their medicine, some can't live without it. Working in a nursing home, or retirement home is another choice. Most people don't like going to the dentist, but a job as a dentist, or dental assistant, is also immune to the recession.

There are recession proof jobs in other fields besides the health care industry. Some popular choices are security jobs, and law enforcement. Employment within the utilities or energy industry are excellent careers as well. Waste water treatment jobs are always in demand, due to the need for clean water. Everyone uses electricity too. Green, renewable energy jobs, such as solar power, are rapidly gaining popularity. Accounting is yet another one of many recession proof jobs. This next one is not for all people, but it's definitely not affected by the slow economy. That is a job as a mortician. Death is a sad fact of life. If you are the right kind of person, this field offers many different job opportunities. A job as a bankruptcy lawyer is a product of poor economic times. One more career path you could look into is teaching. Depending on what part of the country you live in, teachers are usually in demand.

There are many recession proof jobs to choose from. Will you be able to get one of these jobs? I hate to say it but most people won't qualify for the types of jobs we spoke about above. Most of the good recession proof jobs require a college education. If you are one of the many workers who lost their job, due to the horrible economy, it will be tough to afford going back to school. Some states offer assistance to displaced workers. If you can get assistance, I highly recommend that you take advantage of it. While money is an issue for some, time is an issue for others. It can take years of education in order to land one of these great careers.

There is an alternative to the jobs we spoke about earlier. With basic computer skills you can start an online business. It doesn't require an expensive college degree. You don't need to be a computer programmer to succeed. There are different ways to generate income with an internet based business. One popular way is through ad revenue. You simply place ads on your website. When visitors click on the ads you will get paid. Google AdSense is a popular free ad service. You could sell your own products, such as t-shirts, or ebooks. A more complicated method is called affiliate marketing. You get paid a commission for recommending a companies products or services. An online business can be a very lucrative option to traditional labor.

There are many recession proof jobs out there. Health care jobs seem to be really hot now. Jobs in law enforcement, education, utilities, and accounting are also top choices. If returning to college is not an option, there is an alternative. You may seriously want to consider an online business of your own. You supply the good work ethic, and determination to succeed. Your internet business will provide the rest.
